NORMAN DESILETS Norman Maurice Desilets of Port Clements, B.C. passed away on January 8, 2016. Norm, as he was known to all, was born on February 8, 1945. He is predeceased by his parents, Emile and Irene Desilets, from Elie, Manitoba. Norm will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Fiona Ellis, as well as three brothers, and two sisters, Marc (Renate) Desilets, Fernand (Joan) Desilets, Lynette (Bernie) Desilets, Michelle (Robert) Bailey and Roger (Cathy) Desilets and 10 nephews and nieces. He will also be lovingly remembered by family and friends across Canada, the U.S. and U.K. Norm lived in harmony and humility within his natural surroundings. He raised a pure voice, not only in song, but also in passionate defense for the care and preservation of his beautiful habitat. He was a true steward of all he was blessed with and leaves a lasting legacy among those who shared life with him in Haida G'waii. An avid fisherman and expert river guide, Norm spent his happiest hours fishing his beloved Yakoun River. He will leave a tight line tugging on the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Norm walked gently on this earth. May he rest in peace.

  • I met Norman and Fiona in Prince Rupert under medical circumstances. Norman left a lasting impression on me. I have spoke often of this gentleman that came into my office with a youthful aura. I just learned today of Norman's passing and I am greatly saddened. Fiona, I remember how he pushed you in a wheelchair up hill all the way to the hospital. What a treasure you found in him. I wish you and all his family and friends comfort and peace. I am glad to have met him. - Posted by: Elizabeth (Aquaintance ) on: Feb 26, 2016

  • I am saddened to learn of Norm's death. My family were partners with Norm on Kumdis Island and Norm kindly allowed us to use his cabin and tools while I built our place. We played some music together in those days and I recall his excellent Gordon Lightfoot renditions. Norm had a big vision for Kumdis which included doing the work of subdividing and building an access road. I have always wondered what he had in mind but his love for the Haida Gwaii environment was clear. I did run into him here and there over the years in Port Clements living quietly and enjoying his fishing. He was always gracious and courteous and to my mind a true gentleman. - Posted by: Dave Bowering (friend) on: Jan 30, 2016

  • I have great memories of Norm, playing by the river, Christmas gatherings at the farm in Elie (leg wrestling), and our cousins reunion in St. Jean. From what I remember of Norm, he could easily have written the following poem. I hope it brings comfort to all of you who miss him. My sincerest condolences to each of you. Ray WHEN I MUST LEAVE YOU FOR A LITTLE WHILE When I must leave you for a little while Please do not grieve and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you through the years But start out bravely, with a gallant smile And, for my sake and in my name, live on and do all things the same. Heed not your loneliness on empty days But fill each waking hour in useful ways Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn, will comfort you and hold you near And never, never be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky. by Helen Steiner Rice - Posted by: Ray Ayotte (Cousin) on: Jan 26, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of Norman's passing. I have great memories of Norman when growing up in Elie. Curé Roy made him my latin teacher when I was 10 and hoping to become "un enfant d'coeur". He was diligent if not demanding but he got me through it. Good memories of laying about the yard by the river or in the rowboat going over "le confitéor" and required responses. My condolences to all the family, Rest in Peace Norman Philippe - Posted by: Philippe Desilets (Cousin & friend) on: Jan 25, 2016

  • Our deep condolences to Norms's family and especially to Roger and Cathy Desilets (and family). We went to visit Norm once in the Queen Charlotte Islands many years ago and he taught us how to do fly-fishing. Such a gentle man and a true gentleman. RIP Norm..... - Posted by: Sam & Rita Savoie (Friends) on: Jan 25, 2016

  • I'll miss Norm greatly. Although we lived miles apart in our adult lives, we lived life very close together in our formative years. Norm was never far behind me experiencing all our activities in Elie and surrounding area's. We learned many of life's lessons together, and shared many common traits that cemented our relationship for the rest of our lives. Tight lines Bro. Loved and remembered forever.
